For our community building efforts at Loveless Porter, we seek out causes that speak to us. CASA CIS (Court Appointed Special Advocates, Children’s Intervention Services) is a great example. They help neglected and abused children, through a network of volunteer advocates who watch over the children’s safety and needs, and provide them with a voice in court.
CASA advocates are able to get different information from the children than a case worker might, giving additional insight. Their goal is to keep families together whenever they safely can: children in CASA spend substantially less time in foster care, and are half as likely to re-enter the foster system.
My friend Josie Gieger, principal at BION, was the CASA board chair for many years; her passion for the organization is inspiring. My wife and I became regulars at the annual fundraisers, and Loveless Porter has been a major contributor. I even dressed up as an elf for their holiday event.
Still, the stories that you hear, what these children go through; it drives you to be a bigger part of the whole process. This year, I was proud to be accepted on to the CASA Board of Directors. Expect to hear more about this incredible organization, and ways that you too can show your support. From attending events like Evening Under the Stars in September, to sponsoring an advocate for a child, or even just sharing information and generating awareness, there are a number of ways to make a difference. Most of which do not involve wearing an elf costume!
